Therapy 101: When To Start Therapy

This month we’re tackling the age-old question: Do I need therapy?

The short answer: probably. Most people do at some point in their life.

But how do you know when it’s time to seek out a therapist for support?

Sometimes when we’re in the thick of it, it can be hard to take a step back and realize we may need the additional expert support. Below are a few instances that may mean it’s time to reach out:

  1. You’ve experienced something traumatic
  2. You’re going through a huge transition in your life
  3. You’re having trouble managing your emotions
  4. You may simply feel overwhelmed and need an unbiased person to help you process

Therapy can be beneficial not just for yourself, but also for your relationship. Beginning couples counseling can be a daunting endeavor, but it may ultimately be the support that is desperately needed to bring a relationship back on track. We asked Dr. Everett Bailey PhD, LMFT, owner and lead provider at the Arizona Center for Marriage and Family Therapy, when he thought someone should consider going to therapy:

“Couples should consider starting therapy when they have recurring fights that don’t get resolved. However, it may also be wise to consider therapy if couples are feeling dissatisfied in their relationship or would like to improve their relationship.”

It doesn’t necessarily need to be a major event that brings you to your therapist’s doorstep, in some cases it can just be the potential for a better relationship.

Here are some signs you may benefit from marriage counseling:

  1. You experience recurring conflict that does not end in a resolution
  2. One or both partners are dissatisfied or unhappy in the current state of the relationship
  3. You experience difficulties regarding intimacy in the relationship
  4. You’re navigating a major life transition such as divorce, death, or parenting
