Working with Young Children and Parents
As a Special Education teacher, I have a background in child development, social-emotional learning, and early intervention that helps me connect with growing families. I am trained as an Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant (ECMHC) working with children 0-5 years old and their primary caregivers; focusing on attachment, temperament, and stress reduction. This method has an emphasis on parenting, forming bonds, addressing attachment wounds, and developing behavioral plans. Sessions include modeling for parents, evaluating interactions, and implementing treatment plans for parents or caretakers to use in the home. At each intake I assess milestones and address any developmental or learning delays and refer for testing if appropriate.
Working with Couples in Betrayal
I offer couples counseling with an empathetic understanding of the hard work it takes to move forward as one. I am specially trained to work with couples who have experienced betrayal. Working individually with the betrayed partner, addressing false belief patterns, attachment wounds, and then implementing connection techniques to be applied at home. Therapy transitions into couples coming in for joint sessions, identifying emotional displacement, and putting individual work into the combined relationship. Trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a model used to help clients recognize patterns of behaviors, I use introspection to find the core purpose of behaviors, and then work to change those patterns. I have additional training from The Association of Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS) to work with the partner and symptoms of Betrayal Trauma.
My master’s degree includes a concentration in the Treatment of Trauma, Abuse, and Deprivation. I address trauma as a whole system, using a Cognitive-Behavioral approach (CBT) that helps individuals acknowledge destructive patterns, and change negative emotional, behavioral, and thought patterns into positive solutions. Change begins to occur through the use of awareness and cognitive responses, mindfulness, and implementing healthy coping skills; all this directly helps resolve PTSD symptoms. I love the resilience, grit, and adaptability that children, couples, and families possess. I have a passion for building up and strengthening families and believe in the power of counseling to help heal things that feel bent or broken. I am a firm believer in the human spirit, and its ability to heal and strengthen through adversity.
I have worked with the family unit for over 16 years as a Special Education teacher, church leader, and mother. I have been married for 18 years to a cute surfer I met in Hawaii. We have four rambunctious children, and an adorable Aussie. As a family we love to attend sporting events, play outside, and escape on family vacations. I believe that showing love, kindness, and acceptance are key elements to facilitating change – and it all starts in the home.
